The Labrador Retriever is a dog of strong, compact build, characterized by activity and agility. It is well-balanced – neither too heavy nor excessively massive. It has a broad head, well-developed chest, and distinctly arched ribs. The loins and hindquarters are strong and broad, emphasizing its strength and readiness for action.

Behavior and Temperament

The Labrador Retriever embodies gentleness and energy. It is a dog that is:

  • Active – Its energy and playfulness make it an excellent companion for people with a dynamic lifestyle.
  • Possessing an exceptional sense of smell – This gift makes Labradors excellent in rescue services and as hunting dogs.
  • A water lover – Labradors love to swim, making them happy in nature.
  • Easy to adapt – Labradors can adjust to various living conditions and environments, making them ideal companions in any situation.
  • A devoted friend – Labradors are extremely loyal and friendly, and their intelligence and obedience make them ideal family dogs.

The Labrador is a dog with a friendly disposition, devoid of any signs of aggression or timidity. Its alertness and playfulness make it an indispensable companion, ready to brighten every day of its owner.

History and Origin

It is widely believed that the Labrador originated from the coast of Greenland, where fishermen used dogs of similar appearance to assist in fishing. These dogs excelled in water work, supported by their waterproof coat and otter-like tail, which acted as a rudder.

Compared to other breeds, the Labrador is not very old. The first breed club was established in 1916, and the yellow Labrador club was founded in 1925. Earlier, in the late 19th century, these dogs were brought to England by Col. P. Hawker and the Earl of Malmesbury. Labradors quickly gained recognition in field trials due to their intelligence and working ability. One of them, a dog named Malmesbury Tramp, was described by Duchess Howe as the "father of modern Labradors."

Character and Disposition

The Labrador Retriever is a dog with an exceptionally friendly and cheerful character. Its traits make it an indispensable companion:

  • Retrieving is their passion – Labradors love to fetch objects. Fetch games are not only great entertainment for them but also a way to strengthen the bond with their owner.
  • Love for water – These dogs love water and are excellent swimmers. Trips to the lake, river, or sea are a true celebration for a Labrador.
  • Devotion and sociability – Labradors are exceptionally loyal and attached to their caregivers. Their motto is: "Always where you are." Prolonged loneliness does not suit this breed – they need constant human contact.
  • Sensitivity – Labradors are affectionate dogs that do not respond well to harsh punishment. It is better to praise and reward them for positive behaviors, which builds their trust and confidence.

Happiness of a Labrador

To be happy, a Labrador needs daily exercise, intellectual games, and human closeness. Long walks, fetch games, and time spent together are the foundation of their well-being. A healthy diet, tailored to the breed's needs, also plays a crucial role.
