Earlier, in the late 19th century, these dogs were brought to England by Col. P. Hawker and the Earl of Malmesbury. Labradors quickly gained recognition in field trials due to their intelligence and working ability. One of them, a dog named Malmesbury Tramp, was described by Duchess Howe as the "father of modern Labradors."
